The short answer

It can, but not always in the way people assume. In an occupational pension scheme, qualifying maternity absence must preserve scheme membership and pension rights as if you were at work and being paid normally. Unpaid additional maternity leave can be different. Separately, Maternity Benefit gives PRSI credits, and extra unpaid leave may require an application for maternity leave credits. The practical answer is to check both your workplace scheme rules and your PRSI record.

Start with the workplace pension

Ask HR or the pension administrator what happened to your own contributions, the employer contribution and pensionable service during paid and unpaid maternity leave. The legal protections differ depending on whether the absence is qualifying maternity absence and whether salary was paid.

Then check the State Pension record

If you received Maternity Benefit, PRSI credits are normally awarded automatically. For unpaid additional maternity leave, credits may need to be applied for after you return to work. Check your Contribution Statement rather than assuming the period is recorded correctly.

The useful question is not “did I take maternity leave?”

It is: what happened to each part of my retirement saving during that period — workplace pension, employer contribution and PRSI record? Those three answers may be different.
